A camp-based programme for 12-13 year-olds,
lasting either 8 or 15 days

The first Youth Meeting was held in 1969.

Youth Meetings bring small groups of young people, of similar ages together from different countries within a region.

Youth Meetings are for 25-35 participants (aged 12-13), coordinated by adult staff. Young people aged under 16 travel in delegations with an adult leader.

Join a Youth Meeting and explore aspects of a theme that affects us all, such as democracy, and share your perspectives and learn from each  other. You will also think about how you can use what you gain from your experience - new understanding and planning and communication skills - beyond the camp in your school, college or community.

As with all of our programmes, you will find there is an emphasis on friendship and fun!

The theme of the Youth Meeting in Halmstad, Sweden, was “Expect the unexpected”.

We stayed on a campsite a few miles away from Halmstad a city located on the south west of the country. The 24 participants were from Europe.

Our aim for the week was to try to innovate and come up with new ideas for pretty much anything. “Anything” meaning new activities, new ways of splitting people into groups, new ways of waking people up, but most importantly new ways of thinking; this could be trying to branch out, to think outside the box. What we learned, thanks to this theme, is that life is full of surprises and you need to be ready to adapt to any situation that might come up.

One of the best part of +16 camps is that you are the one in charge. The staff had planned the two first days and then it was up to us to decide what we wanted to do and when. We were divided in “planning groups” of 5; and every day, one group was in charge in the morning agenda (waking up the team and giving them tasks and timeframes) and another group in the afternoon agenda. We all developed our autonomy skills.

For NYE we had a nice dinner at the camp and then went outside to watch the countdown on live tv. We tried the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes for the last 12 seconds of the year, and saw fireworks light up in the sky as the new year started. Then we celebrated the new year in the activity room with some music and everyone had such a great time.

Overall, we learned how to be more independent and more responsible which was a great takeaway and experience. We would recommend this camp to every 16+.
